Dental health is a vital part of your pet’s overall wellbeing. At Parkland Veterinary Hospital, we offer complete veterinary dental care for dogs and cats in Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe, and surrounding Central Alberta communities. Regular dental exams and cleanings help prevent painful oral disease, maintain fresh breath, and protect your pet’s long-term health.
Most pets hide signs of dental pain, so issues often go unnoticed until the disease becomes advanced. Through preventive care and early detection, we can help protect your pet from unnecessary discomfort and reduce the risk of oral bacteria affecting major organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.
Comprehensive Veterinary Dental Services
We offer a full range of dental care, including:
- Complete oral exams
- Professional cleanings (scaling & polishing)
- Digital dental X-rays
- Treatment of periodontal disease
- Tooth extractions when necessary
- Oral surgery
- Pain management
- At-home dental care instruction
Dental radiographs are essential because many problems occur below the gumline, where they can’t be seen without imaging.
Signs Your Pet May Have Dental Disease
If you notice any of the following, your pet may need a dental exam:
- Bad breath
- Red or bleeding gums
- Yellow or brown tartar buildup
- Drooling or difficulty chewing
- Pawing at the mouth
- Loose, broken, or missing teeth
- Facial swelling
- Reluctance to eat
Even if your pet shows no symptoms, unseen dental disease may still be present.
Why Routine Dental Care Matters
Plaque and tartar build up quickly on your pet’s teeth. Without regular professional cleanings, bacteria can cause:
- Gingivitis
- Gum recession
- Tooth loss
- Oral pain
- Jaw infections
- Systemic disease
Routine dental care keeps your pet comfortable and encourages healthier eating, better behaviour, and a happier life.
What to Expect From Your Pet’s Dental Procedure
During your pet’s dental visit, we:
- Perform a pre-surgery exam and may recommend bloodwork
- Use modern anaesthesia and monitoring to ensure safety
- Clean above and below the gumline
- We may take digital dental X-rays
- Treat periodontal disease
- Remove any severely damaged or infected teeth
- Polish teeth for long-lasting protection
- Provide pain relief and home-care guidance
Your pet goes home the same day with clear instructions for recovery.
