Microchipping

Every pet deserves the best chance to make it home if they ever become lost. Microchipping provides safe, permanent, and reliable identification that dramatically increases the odds of reunification. Parkland Veterinary Hospital offers microchipping services for pets in Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe, and surrounding communities.

Unlike collars or tags, which can fall off, fade, or be removed, a microchip stays with your pet for life — offering you peace of mind no matter what unexpected situations arise.

What Is a Microchip and How Does It Work?

A microchip is a tiny, grain-of-rice-sized device placed just under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. The process is quick, safe, and causes minimal discomfort — similar to a routine vaccination.

Each chip contains a unique ID number that is linked to your contact information in a secure national database. When a lost pet is brought to a veterinary clinic, shelter, or rescue, a scanner reveals this ID number, allowing staff to contact you right away.

Why Microchipping Is So Important

Even indoor pets are at risk of becoming lost due to:

  • Open doors or windows
  • Loud noises (fireworks, storms)
  • Visitors or contractors
  • Accidents or unexpected escapes
  • Travel or boarding mishaps

Without permanent identification, reuniting lost pets is much harder. Microchipping significantly increases the chance of a safe return home.

What You Need to Do After Microchipping

Microchipping is only effective if your information is kept up to date. After your pet is microchipped, make sure to:

  • Register your contact information
  • Update your address and phone number if they change
  • Add multiple contacts if possible
  • Check your microchip company’s online portal periodically

We can help you complete your registration and show you how to update it in the future.

A Stress-Free, Lifetime Identification Solution

Microchipping takes just seconds but lasts for life. It’s one of the most important steps you can take to protect your pet from the unexpected. The chip never needs replacing, doesn’t require maintenance, and poses no harm or discomfort to your pet.
